The Third Son (Kings of Cardenas)

Prince Damien, the spoiled youngest son of the king of Cardenas, finds that his world will never quite be the same again when a fiery Gypsy girl, Esmeralda, comes dancing into his privileged life.

Rake. Rogue. Scoundrel. Each of these words has been used to describe Damien Largess, youngest prince of Cardenas, most frequently by his ridiculously somber eldest brother. Damien is perfectly content to spend his days drinking at the card tables, and his nights in the bed of his scheming m

This book really surprised me. I am a huge supporter of Indie authors as I am an Indie author as well, but I will be the first to admit that many Indie books (as well as traditional) can be a hard read, mainly due to editing. This book didn’t have those problems. Or, if it did, I was so caught up in the story that I didn’t notice them. That says a lot about a writer’s style. I was a little hesitant at first as I was introduced to Damien and Esmeralda, the main romantic characters. Could they possibly love each other? Can this author really make this work, especially since the only thing between them at first seems to be lust. But, all romances start with attraction and the work of a good writer is building on that attraction. Elise does this in this book. Damien, especially, touched me as a character. I think it can be hard as the youngest child of three in a royal family to believe in himself. Although handsome and a womanizer, he still feels he needs to do something with himself. His character is strong, his need to be with Esmeralda a true testament that he isn’t the womanizer that everyone accuses him of. What he does, he does because it’s expected of him. I don’t want to include too many spoilers in this review as I strongly encourage people to read it.

I will say this, the characters are well-developed, more so as you get deeper into the book. The story line is strong, the intrigue is gripping. This all makes for an interesting read. And the romance leaves you feeling satisfied, especially if you are a romance fan like I am.

I will admit that I do not normally like to give 5 star reviews, although I have before, because I always think there is room for improvement. But, this book was a great read. Like I said, I was truly too engrossed in the story to notice many editing errors. But, even if there were any, they were minor. I just really “felt” good after finishing this book. I look forward to the next:)

I thought Damien and Esmerelda (the hero and heroine) were both really sweet. The story started off with Prince Damien falling for the beautiful gypsy dancer, Esmerelda, and as you can imagine, there were many obstacles in their way. This book has all the dangerous drama you’d expect from a story full of royalty, complete with a murderous villain and a scheming ex-misstress. Near the end of the book I realized how emotionally invested I’d become in the characters. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone, but the ending really took me by surprise. This is a romance though, so ultimately there is a happily ever after.

I am awake at 8am, not because I enjoy the early morning, but because I simply wouldn’t stop reading this book. The last couple days I’d been able to sneak in some chapters, but last night I really got a chance to read and simply wouldn’t stop. The attention to detail was excellent. The characters completely believable and realistic. I surprised myself with getting emotional over some scenes I wouldn’t have put into a fairytale. The fact that this book completely messed with all my emotions shows me exactly how talented this writer is.
