Isn’t it funny how some synopses keep you from buying books and others draw you to a book. I read the warning and immediately knew I had to read this book. This is a dark book and not for the faint of heart! I read 1 person’s review of how dark this book is, as it clearly states it in the warning. She gave the book 1 star review because of how dark the book was. Why read a book if you don’t like dark books especially with a warning like the one for this book?

I don’t like telling you about the story in my review because if you read the synopsis it tells you what the book is about. I do like telling you whether I loved a story or not and this is a story that I loved. Marissa is great at drawing you in and describing what is happening to her characters. I was sucked into this book! I can’t wait to read more of Marissa’s books. DO HEED The WARNING: if you don’t like DARK don’t read this book! There is a long narrative with the warning for this book and this is the lightest of her books!

This is not a story for the faint of heart and this is not a story of love and romance. It is a story of a young woman surviving with what life has given her. Taken in by Devin after her parents death, she believed her guardian would treat her like a beloved niece as he had before. Her life changes on her sixteenth birthday as she becomes a slave and is trained to please her master. Battered but never beaten, Anna’s sweetness, spirit, and naïveté makes this book stand out from many others in this edgy, dark, erotic novella. I got this book believing it just to be one more dark erotica, one of many that have been written, and got so much more.

There are also elements of something more below the surface of the story. Anna has visions of a young man that has plagued her since her parents death. Someone who makes her feel safe and loved who turns out to be real. Sexy Alex and his equally hot family are much more than meets the eye. And that ending and excerpt of the next book!! Wow! Want to know more? Then you defintely need to pick this up. It is uniquely different and is the first novel in a series that will have you panting for the next book.

Yes, I did like this book. It is well written. It is a very good dark read. It was not erotic. There is no romance. It ends in a cliffhanger. Why do I say it is not erotic? Every time Anna has sex, it is rape. Every time. Yes she orgasms. Yes, many times she enjoys it. It is still rape. The scene with Kurt, where he has 2 other guys join in? Rape. I hated Kurt. Anna has been brain washed and trained to believe her only purpose in life is to please men. She has been trained to orgasm even when being raped. But like I said, Anna has only ever been raped. That upset me. Rape is NOT erotic. Rape is NOT romantic. If a woman orgasms while being raped, it is STILL rape. So that pretty much takes care of the no romance comment I made. There is no romance when every one is raping her. I get that this is a continuing series. I get, and hope, that Anna’s character becomes more developed and aware of the horror she has been subjected to. I like Anna. I also look forward to see how, and where, Anna and Alex’s relationship develops/goes.

I was confused as to the world that this story took place in. Anna is part of an organization that raises sex slaves. Everyone seems to except this as normal. And the paranormal aspect threw me as well. I am not saying I did not like those aspects of the story. I just need clarification. I have a lot of unanswered questions. I hope I find those answers in the next installment. Oh yeah! I hate cliffhangers. I read this book knowing there is one and now I remember why I hate them. I hate to be left hanging. When does the next book come out? I cannot wait to read it. I hope the next book actually has some romance and sex that does not include the continuous rape of Anna. I do not find rape erotic. No woman should. If you have been raped you would know this. But I do love my dark reads. And this is a good one. I just need more answers. And I want them now. Not some time in the unforeseeable future. Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I really, really, really hated Devin. What is the story with Jack? Why did he hate her so much? Ian? What’s his story? I could keep going with the questions. Too many are unanswered.

I know this review is confusing. That is because the book confused me. I look forward to being less confused by the future installments to come. As dark reads go, this is a good one. It sure is dark, but it is not erotic or romantic. Now I am becoming quite repetitive. Sorry. If you like dark, then you will love this book. Yes, for all you dark read lovers, I would recommend this book.

PS….Does anyone have a heads up on when the next book will be released? Please let me know.
