Consenting Adults

This collection of five unrelated short stories looks at romantic relationships in various forms, from the tame to the erotic.

The title story, “Consenting Adults”, explores the eroticism of an enthusiastic “Yes!” between lovers.

“The Haricot Verts” peeks in on a tense moment between a couple where she can’t seem to say what’s on her mind.

“The Reluctant Exhibitionist” follows a young couple learning to open up and share their fantasies without embarrassme

I admit: This is a new genre for me. That being said, this collection of stories is not what I expected, and I mean that in a good way.

A quick read, J. Lea Lopez has wound together 5 stories that take a thoughtful approach to a variety of scenarios. The book opens with ‘Consenting Adults’, and unflinching and intense study of rampant desire. More in the erotica vein that romance, there is also an understated vulnerability in it’s presentation.

‘The Harlot Verts’ is very brief, but a condensed study in insecurity that is artistic, unusual and touching.

‘The Reluctant Exhibitionist’ returns the reader to the erotica, presenting an interesting slant on romance mixed with vouyerism.

‘The Adventures of Sasquatch’ was, for me, the brightest and most sensitive story in this collection — and my personal favorite. Thought provoking in the insight of the main character, it provides a brilliant insight into insecurity, without the character coming off as pathetic. A virtuoso performance and in no way stereotypical.

‘Between the Lines’ brings the modern relized internet relation into the fold, only this time it works out. While my least favorite of the collection, it is still very readable.

These five stories and their varied approach work as the set-up for the first three chapters of the authors upcoming book. Again, there is a deviation from the prior works and, again, it is well-written and engaging. I fully intend to purchase it upon release.

My not going the full five stars for the review has to do with some repetition, a small gender error I noted that slipped through editing, and stylistic issues that vary from my personal preference. Regardless, I highly recommend this collection and look forward to Ms. Lopez’s future works.

Mouthwateringly hot, insightful and emotionally revealing! Did I say HOT? And, yes, I give it 5 stars, because I could not, in good conscience, give it any less.

I normally don’t pay a lot of attention to reviews – particularly the 5 star reviews. I often suspect they are given by family and friends of the author. That being said, you should know the author is neither friend nor family of mine.

These short stories are very well written. Comprised of good grammar, good sentence structure, very believable dialogue and situations. I sat down after midnight, intending to just give it a quick look to see if it was, indeed, something I wanted to add to my reading list for another day. I couldn’t stop reading until it was finished and then still wanted more.

At the end of this collection of short stories, the author has included the first three chapters of her next book titled “Sorry’s Not Enough” due out before the end of this month (May of 2013). I’m anxiously awaiting that release.

Kudos to J. Lea Lopez for a job well done!

Consenting Adults is a short story collection that contains both erotic and romantic fiction.

The things that really stood out for me: it’s incredibly well written, the characters are developed, interesting, and likeable, and even though the stories are short, I didn’t feel anything was left out or missing.

The preview for Sorry’s Not Enough is intriguing; something very new and different for the New Adult genre and I seriously can’t wait for it to be released!
