From the book: She wandered to the edge of the dock and put her foot in. Cold. She’d settle for dangling her feet in it for now. She sat on the dock, kicking the water and enjoying the warm sun on her face. “Aren’t you going to go in?” said a voice behind her. She smiled.

He must have read her mind. Or she had read his. “You’re up early,” she replied. “I didn’t stay up that late,” he said, settling down beside her. “Not as late as everyone else, anyway. I imagine they’ll all be sleeping in for a while. It’s not even six yet.” She opened her eyes and looked at him expectantly. “You want to swim out to the floating dock?” he asked. “Too cold,” she replied, hoping he’d come up with a better offer. “Wimp,” he retorted. “Come on!” He dove into the water, his body arcing over hers, then came up gasping and spluttering a moment later. “Whooo! You’re right—it’s cold!” “Told you!” she laughed. He swam back to the dock and pulled himself out of the water. She admired the strong arms and lean torso, enjoying the drops of water that glistened on his skin. “My God, you are hot,” she whispered. He grinned. “You still owe me,” he said. She could feel the heat beginning to build deep inside her. “Ready to pay up whenever you are,” she answered. He gave her a long look. “Grandpa bought a new canoe. It’s in the boathouse. You want to see it?” he asked. “Nothing I’d like better,” she answered. Picking up her towel, she stood up and followed him into the boathouse. Canoes and kayaks were stacked in the old wooden building; the walls were lined with oars and life jackets. Light slanted in from a couple of high windows. They made their way to the back. It wasn’t completely private, but they couldn’t easily be seen from the entrance. They stood staring at each other for a moment, then Jacob took her in his arms and kissed her deeply. She responded passionately. Jacob broke away from her after a moment. “What’s underneath this robe?” he whispered, fumbling with the belt at her waist. He undid it and slipped the robe off her shoulders. He stepped back. “Very nice,” he nodded in approval. “Very nice, indeed.”
